AAI Track + Field, Morton Stadium, Santry, Dublin, Aug 25 2000

ON Sunday 20th at a TNT AAI track and field championships at the Morton Stadium, Santry, Dublin, Bandon A.C.s Breda Dennehy-Willis competed in an exciting 5000m race against the country's top long distance runners, including Una English, DCH, the 1999 title holder. The weather conditions for the race were good, light breeze, a little sun and no rain. Breda led the 21 ladies throughout the race, although Una English kept on her shoulders. After a couple of laps of the 400m race track Una English overtook the Bandon athlete for two laps but Breeda again took the lead for the final two laps. Breda claimed her first national senior title with a devastating sprint over the final 300m in a time of 15-25-32, which was well inside the qualifying standard for Sydney. Breda was very happy with her performance. Her goal was to win the 5000m and now she heads for Sydney as the Irish champion. At the finish the entire Sydney bound team was introduced to the large crowd and did their lap of honour with many of the team flying out to Australia from Dublin on Monday morning. Paul Kelleher was fifth in the 200m final and fifth in the heat of the 100m. Darren Coughlan did not take part due to injury.
